This course, Mindfulness Practices to Improve Self-Regulation & Well-being for the Trauma Survivoris based on the neurobiology of trauma, trauma-informed practices, basic yoga and mindfulness for the trauma survivor, and current research. The three training modules are open to anyone interested in learning how to incorporate a trauma-informed format into yoga classes, social work, and/or classroom and student interactions. The course will help you:

  • Expand your knowledge of the causes and symptoms of trauma
  • Learn how to incorporate trauma-informed practices into your classroom, practice and/or workplace.
  • Learn basic mindfulness techniques for self-care and when working with trauma survivors and/or at-risk children.

Module 1: Yoga & Mindfulness in Court-involved and Recovery Programs

Module 1 will focus on trauma-informed Yoga and Mindfulness practices when working with court-involved (inmates, parolees, post-release, juvenile offenders) and addiction recovery clients. There will be two hours of pre-reading and -viewing that will be emailed to participants one week prior to the training. There will be three hours of contact instruction.

Topics include: Overview of Trauma, Trauma-informed Practices, Non-violent Communication, Needs of the Specific Populations, and a sample class. This is a lecture-style seminar, but brief mindfulness and chair yoga sessions will be offered.

Module 2: Yoga & Mindfulness for At-Risk Children

Module 2 will focus on trauma-informed Yoga and Mindfulness practices when working with Child Welfare clients, including children, siblings, and/or parents or foster parents. There will be two hours of pre-reading and -viewing, a one-hour dinner discussion (optional), and three hours of lecture. Pre-work will be emailed to participants one week prior to the training.

Topics include: Clinical Overview of Trauma and Trauma Diagnoses, Trauma-informed Practices for Children with ACE’s, Child Welfare and Risk Factors, Vicarious Trauma, and a sample class. This is a lecture-style seminar, but a brief mindfulness and chair yoga session will be provided.

Module 3: Yoga & Mindfulness in the Classroom

Module 3 will focus on trauma-informed Mindfulness practices when working with students K-12 and their teachers in a classroom setting. There will be 2 hours of pre-reading and -viewing, and 3 contact hours. Pre-work will be emailed to participants at least one week prior to the training.

Topics include: Overview of Childhood Trauma and Resulting Behaviors, Trauma-informed Practices for the Classroom, Considerations for Emotional Landscape, and a sample class. This is a lecture-style seminar, but a brief mindfulness and chair yoga session will be offered.
